Mike Gillett started out with a graphic design degree, a Mac LCII and a pair of smelly trainers. Sixteen years later he’s an experienced web designer/programmer and the smelly trainers have long since been replaced by smelly shoes!
After working in the print industry, and then for an ISP’s web design agency, Mike joined up with Nick at the end of the last millennium (how old does that sound?) to form Semantic. Mike’s design and coding background enabled the new Semantic to offer the production facilities to accompany Nick’s consultancy work. And this combination has proved successful!
For the first six years Mike was the sole designer and programmer at Semantic, handling everything from print and web page design to database and server programming, until the company expanded and Chris came in to help spread the programming load!
Away from work, Mike plays drums and percussion (though these days it’s strictly for the ‘amateur dramatics’ scene) and also has a keen interest in photography (gadgets!). His photos often crop up on our clients’ web sites.
Mike has enjoyed travel over the years, exploring Australia, The United States, Canada, Guatemala, Mexico, and Belize as well as most of Western Europe. Travel broadens the mind and forces you to step outside your comfort zone!
Mike made the excellent move of marrying Alison (a gorgeous primary school teacher) in October 2000. Their son, Matthew, was born in January 2006. And in July 2008 we were blessed with Katherine.
Semantic is now five strong, with Neil and James on board, and Mike feels older by the day! It's now over ten years since he and Nick started this adventure. Time flies!
