Forgive me if you've heard this before, my favourite joke about consultancy.
... A physician, a civil engineer, and a consultant were arguing about what was the oldest profession in the world.
The physician remarked, "Well, in the Bible, it says that God created Eve from a rib taken out of Adam. This clearly required surgery, and so I can rightly claim that mine is the oldest profession in the world."
The civil engineer interrupted, and said, "But even earlier in the book of Genesis, it states that God created the order of the heavens and the earth from out of the chaos. This was the first and certainly the most spectacular application of civil engineering. Therefore, fair doctor, you are wrong: mine is the oldest profession in the world."
The consultant leaned back in his chair, smiled, and then said confidently, "Ah, but who created the chaos?"
In the beginning...
Sticking with the religious theme, here's how Semantic began. In the beginning was Nick, freshed faced and newly escaped from IBM's New Media Lab. It was 1997 and the internet was hot hot hot.
Our hero found work easy to come by... by and large companies were struggling to understand this thing called the web, and he helped them out. He'd look at their business, their systems and their aspirations... and pointed them in the right direction.
"Great", they would say.. "Wonderful, Lovely, Smashing, Really Useful"... "But please please please can you help us implement the recommendations. We can't get tab A to fit into slot C on our own".
And so Semantic was born... to deliver.
And today...
As you'll have gathered from this web site we do lots of things now, design, development, email marketing, animation, copywriting and so on... but the beating heart of the business remains the consultancy.
Of course most of our consultancy today is delivered free, as part of other services... but if you just like to borrow our brains for an hour or two, no other work required... we'd be very happy to help.
